A select group of recent Orthopaedic graduates, with an interest in arthroscopy, was assembled by Smith and Nephew to undertake a course in arthroscopic surgery to expand their knowledge and experience. On the 29th may 2015, we lectured the candidates on certain knee topics (Anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions, meniscal repairs) and discussed any concerns and questions that they had. The candidates then undertook a course on presentation skills.
On 9/10 July 2015, a cadaver course was held at Albert Luthuli hospital in KwaZulu-Natal. The night before the course, presentations were done on topics and theory and discussed in length. The following day, a whole day cadaver lab session was held where the candidates were shown how to do basic arthroscopy, meniscal repairs and an ACL reconstruction. All the candidates where then guided through the procedures and allowed to practice on the cadavers.
The course was a huge success and will be followed up at the end of the year, will presentations being made by all the candidates and feedback.
