About Cape Knee Clinic

Dr Hayden HobbsDr Hayden Hobbs is a specialist Orthopaedic knee surgeon, who is trained in all aspects of arthroscopic, reconstructive and degenerative knee surgery. I have a special interest in the sports aspect of knee surgery of all ages, being an active sportsman myself. Rehabilitation for the conservative treatment of knee problems forms an integral part of my treatment philosophy and I have a close working relationship with many local physiotherapy practices and other rehabilitation services.

I graduated from the University of Cape Town Medical School in 1999 and after completing my internship and community service, embarked on my Orthopaedic career. I initially worked in the United Kingdom for 2 years and then returned to South Africa for my specialist Orthopaedic training. I graduated with FC Orth (SA) from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and a MMed Orth from the University of Cape Town in 2009. After this, I completed numerous fellowships in knee surgery.

Fellowships undertaken include with Dr Willem van der Merwe at the Sports Science Orthopaedic Clinic in Cape Town (with special attention paid to soft tissue knee reconstruction especially ACL surgery); Professor Johan Bellemans at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Leuven, Belgium (special attention paid to primary and revision knee arthroplasty); and Professor Philippe Neyret at the Albert Trillat Centre, Croix-Rousse Hospital in Lyon, France (special attention paid to osteotomies around the knee).

My private practice is located at Life Orthopaedic Hospital at Vincent Pallotti in association with the Sports Science Orthopaedic Clinic and Sports Science Institute of South Africa. I am also a Consultant Knee Surgeon in the Orthopaedic Department at Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town, where I co-head the Knee Unit. In this capacity I am actively involved in research and teaching/training registrars and local/international fellows.
‚Äč
I am currently on the executive committee of the South African Knee Society and attend local and international congresses. I am also an active member of the South African Orthopaedic Association and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.

Having focussed most of my attention on ball sports, mostly rugby and cricket, at school and university, I am now a competitive runner having completed the Cape Odyssey, 2 Comrades, 4 Two Ocean ultras and 8 PUFFERS amongst numerous other road and trail runs. I am also an avid road cyclist and mountain biker, having completed many tours including Wines2Whales and Lesotho Sky to mention a few.
